The district held a special board meeting on September 21 to discuss the transition plan to in-person learning. The school board intended to take a vote on the implementation of the plan at this meeting. However, additional information regarding COVID-19 infection rates became available from the Cowlitz County Health Department shortly before the meeting, so the board decided to postpone voting on the transition to in person learning until its September 28 meeting.
The proposed transition plan includes moving to stage two of the district’s reopening plan starting October 5. This means on Monday, October 5 pre-Kindergarten through second grade, and at risk students, would transition to the hybrid learning model. District special education programs (Broadway, Extensive, Pervasive and Behavior) would begin meeting full in-person, 5 days per week at this time. One week later, on Monday, October 12 we propose transitioning grades 3-5 to hybrid learning too. If the school board approves the proposal on the 28th and if health conditions remain favorable, on October 26, middle and high school students will transition from full remote to hybrid learning.
In hybrid learning students would be split into two groups and each group would receive two full days of in-person instruction per week. During the three days each group is not at school, students will be involved in remote learning activities and experiences designed by their classroom teacher. By splitting the students in to two groups, we limit the number of students at school each day, which helps to provide a safe learning environment that keeps students physically distanced as much as possible.
Families who express a desire to remain in 100 percent remote learning while we move into hybrid learning will be able to do so. We surveyed our elementary families last week and will be surveying our middle and high school families this week to determine who plans to remain in remote learning when we begin our hybrid learning transition.
The presentation provided at last night’s board meeting contained details regarding the community health data we are using to help us in our return to school decision making. It also included details on Hybrid Learning and the safety measures being put in place as we begin returning to in-person learning.
